The Shakopee that is located in Minnesota would move the race from the turf to the main track and boost the purse to $2 million if the connections of American Pharoah were to start the Triple Crown winner in the Mystic Lake Derby. This kind of incentives were announced by the Canterbury Park and Minnesota Horsemen’s Benevolent & Protective Association officials. The aforementioned incentives were for Zayat Stables’ American Pharoahon June 11. In addition to that, the race would be scheduled to take place on Sunday, August30. In addition to that, the race would also be scheduled to be held on a 1 1/8 mile on the main track.
The partnership of Canterbury and the the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has revived racing in Minnesota. In an interview that was conducted after the announcement, the president of Canterbury Park, Randy Sampson said that this partnership has allowed them to make a proposal that is hoped to attract the greatest horse in the last four decades to our racetrack. He mentioned that the horse that is mentioned earlier is the winner of the new Triple Crown, American Pharoah.
In the same interview, he also said the main intention to bring the winner of the most prestigious title in the horseracing history, the American Pharoah, is to make the Mystic Lake Derby, the race that is usually done in Minnesota a major race. He believes that by attracting American Pharoah to Canterbury, it will be a great chance to increase the interest of horse racers to come to the Mystic Lake Derby. However, he said that his accomplishment to invite the Triple Crown winner is the work that he and his horsemenhave done.
In a separated interview, the Vice President of Racing said that the ending of 37 year old drought has now ended as the American Pharoah won the Triple Crown title a while ago. He believes that the win that the horse achieved is a tremendous opportunity to the racing industry. Additionally, the winning of the Triple Crown will make a change to the Canterbury Park as it is able to be put into the national racing topic.
Right now, the Mystic Lake Derby has already been offering the largest purse of Canterbury’s 70-day season, which is at $200,000. The race was originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, at one mile on the turf. Therefore, if Zayat Stables and trainer Bob Baffert agree to bring American Pharoah to Canterbury for the race, the race would be the richest race in the history of the track.
